It isn’t often that we get to establish the legacy of the landscapes around us, but that’s precisely the opportunity afforded to Fred Green in the 1960s as a county commissioner for St. Johns County. Green helped plat and name the roadways in and around Crescent Beach, officially tying the stories of friends and family to the streets of the area. In his interview, Green, who was 90 at the time of this interview, remembers growing up in Crescent Beach when electricity had yet to reach the neighborhood, residents relied on cisterns for water—and the occasional drug ring smuggled in tons of marijuana.
